Mammography Technologist
- Degree/Education: Minimum of an Associates of Applied Science degree in Radiological Technology or completed at least twenty-four (24) months of an American Medical Association (AMA) accredited Radiological Technology course. Training program should be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiological Education (JCERT)
- Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) in the specialty identified and maintain continuing education hours as directed by the society. Completion of Certified Operator Training on specific Prodigy/Lunar (GE) Bone Densitometer equipment within 30 days of hire. Possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (as accepted by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)). Possess and maintain an active current, valid, and unrestricted license from a US jurisdiction before practicing independently within the defined scope of practice for their specialty.
- Experience:Have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in mammography within the last three (3) years
Core Duties:
- Receive patients and provide appropriate care. This may include scheduling, reception of the patient, uploading and/or burning CD’s for patients and accomplishing procedural instructions. Determine if any patient preparation is required for special mammography procedures.
- Receive and interpret requests or instructions for mammography exams.
- Place orders and schedule exams in the Military Health System Genesis (MHSG).
- Review patient’s medical record in MHSG, Picture Archive Computer System (PACS), Joint Longitudinal Viewer (JLV), and Medical Reporting System (MRS), for prior imaging and medical history.
- Perform daily cleaning and warm-ups of all mammography units. Perform daily, monthly, quarterly and annual quality control inspections on all mammography units and radiologist reading stations film processors.
Perform screening and diagnostic mammograms to include spot compressions and magnification views when necessary. Correctly position patient and make adjustments as necessary for the required examination. Set up and maintain a sterile field and assist radiologists in ultrasound and along with special procedures.
- Set up, chaperon and assist radiologist when performing diagnostic ultrasound imaging.
- Set up and maintain a sterile filed, while assisting the radiologist in ultrasound and mammography special procedures.
- Order and maintain stock of medications for procedures performed, as per department protocol.
- Place specimen orders into MHS Genisis, along with drop off specimen to the lab
- Coordinate with squadron nurse assigned staff when there is a patient who may need extra assistance for a procedure or after a/an exam or procedure.
- Coordinate with BAMC general surgery nurse, and mammography nurse along with enter order into Military Health System Genesis (MHSG) for all positive biopsy cases, to assure referral and orders are entered into MHSG.
- Compile Medical Reconciliation List (MRL) from Military Health System Genesis (MHSG). Print and review with patient their current medication’s list from MHSG and provide to radiologist. /mammography staff
- Track mammography patient outcomes using the MHSG, and Medical Reporting System
- (MRS). Research the pathology reports and document positive breast cancer biopsy rates for each radiologist as required by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and American College of Radiology (ACR) standards.
- Prepare weekly biopsy schedule for mammography radiologist and staff.
- Make adjustments on equipment as needed to acquire a diagnostic image. Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations. Program the examination equipment. Set up the machine for scanning techniques to be employed. Perform all mammography examinations according to departmental protocols.
- Identify abnormalities during film image processing digital images and determine need for additional mammography views per department protocol (either before or after consultation with department radiologists). Notify physician of significant exams requiring immediate attention.
- Scan all required documents into PACS, and perform image quality control task prior to releasing images to the radiologist for dictation.
- Review, QC, transfer, copy, and upload images into PACS for interpretation of radiologist in accordance with Mammography Quality Standards Act
- (MQSA). Maintain and manage the uploading and downloading of patient prior images to Picture Archiving Communications (PACS).
- Maintain and clean mammography units, equipment, and work area. and film printer.
- Assist with quality control procedures including certification/recertification of equipment by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) standards. Recommend necessary repairs when diagnostic quality is degraded. Stock and maintain an adequate level of supplies required for mammography exams and procedures.
- Attend and participate in work department meeting specifically related to job duties
- Track medical outcomes and follow up on current medical systems (i.e., that any additional orders are reflected and that the exams are completed).
- Process request for prior imaging for military and nonmilitary facilities and manage the data base for tracking these request.
- Maintain all patient HIPAA and PII at all times
- Initiate repair call procedures for equipment malfunctions by notifying designated Government personnel. Report problems to the Biomedical Repair Section and record the problem condition in the trouble call log book.
- Complete, attend, and participate in all required in-person, and on-line training.
Hours of operation are 0630 to 1630, Monday through Friday, with a 1-hour non-paid lunch each shift. Shifts will vary but will not exceed an 8-hour shift and a maximum of 40 hours per week.
